Jay Ryan is a Chicago-area concert poster maker, who screenprints all his hand-drawn work at the Bird Machine, a print shop he started in 1999. Jay will discuss his computer-free design work, his hands-on printing process and some of his favorite prints made during the last 13 years.

As this discussion takes place on the first of April, Jay may simply show slides of rabbits and/or fish which he has seen in various public parks.

Be a progagandist in the war on syllables: chipublib.com design contest

By Sean Cronin 6:55 pm on Wed March 4, 2009

chipublib

Everybody loves a good rebranding campaign (except when they’re executed in violation of city zoning laws), and today the Chicago Public Library opened the floodgates to Chicago designers with a design contest to hype the Library’s new, shorter website url, chipublib.com. Starting March 5, and running through April 9, Chicagoland artists are invited to submit designs inspired by the new url. 30 finalists will be chosen, each of whom will get a professionally printed poster of their work (not mention cred). The winner, who will be announced at a free public event of some sort at the Harold Washington Library on April 23, will also get a frame to put their poster in(!) and, according to a Library press release, an “un-colored pencil drawing of an original screen print contributed by Jay Ryan,” who will judge the contest along with Brian Willette, creative director at All Terrain/Chicago, and Chicago Public Library Commissioner Mary Dempsey. For submission guidelines, go to www.chipublib.org/notwhatyouthink.
